DkIT Erasmus and International Students on Tour

06 December 2018

The DkIT International Office and the Department of Informatics and Creative Arts – in partnership with the Carlingford Lough Heritage Trust - recently hosted an excursion for Erasmus and International students to the coastal towns of Greenore and Carlingford.

60 students registered on Erasmus exchange programmes at DkIT, from partner universities in France, Germany, Denmark, Portugal, Romania and Finland mixed over Music, Dancing and Cultural Presentations with DkIT International students from across the globe including China, Malaysia, Pakistan, Jordan, Oman, Nigeria and Saudi Arabia.

The evening started with a visit to the port-village of Greenore, where students enjoyed a tour of the village’s interactive Railway Museum display and a talk on Greenore’s maritime history and its distinctive 19th Century stone houses, built to accommodate workers of the Great Northern Railway Line.

The tour continued to the Carlingford Heritage Centre, where the Heritage Trust Committee arranged an interesting talk for the group on the Irish language and its origins, followed by a Q&A with the students.

DkIT Music students then entertained the group with a performance of traditional Irish tunes over refreshments in the Heritage Centre. Students then got to see a display of Victorian heritage costumes and even had a chance to dress like a Victorian for an evening!

The evening was rounded off by a lively, entertaining CEILI dance. Students enthusiastically took to the floor to learn the Walls of Limerick, the Siege of Ennis and other popular traditional Irish dances!

The Erasmus+ programme is now in its 25th year at DkIT and over the years the Institute has seen students from many EU countries come for Study, or Work-Placement opportunities to DkIT for a semester, or academic year. The mix of Erasmus, local and international students on DkIT’s campus makes the Institute a truly global melting-pot of cultures and languages!

In recent years, there has been notable interest in Erasmus study abroad opportunities from international students at DkIT, who are interested to pursue an Erasmus dimension to their studies and do a semester abroad, while studying at DkIT. There are 80 Erasmus students at the Institute this semester, and 412 international (non-EU) students – registered on a range of programme across all faculties, from Foundation to Ph.D. Last year 35 students from DkIT went on Erasmus+ to a range of European partner universities and host enterprises on Study and Work-Placement, with students commenting afterwards on the tremendous benefit, learning and fun they had!
